Every living thing on Earth shares the same molecular handedness, with DNA and proteins built from molecular components of a single orientation. Mirror life would reverse that universal rule. A mirror organism would be assembled from the opposite-handed versions of these molecules, and because the immune systems of humans, animals, and plants evolved to recognize ordinary molecules, they might fail to detect it at all.
In a December 2024 article in Science, a working group of leading scientists raised concerns about the creation of mirror life, supported by a comprehensive technical report that provided the first systematic assessment of its feasibility and risks. Since the publication of the Science article, a growing international community has acknowledged that mirror life poses serious risk. The authors of the Science article and many others are calling for governance to prevent the creation of mirror life, absent significant new evidence for reassurance.
In order to ensure dialogue and governance is developed with global perspectives, the Brown Pandemic Center, in partnership with the Mirror Biology Dialogues Fund (MBDF), is supporting the socializing of the risks of mirror life among the African science community, science policymakers, and science communicators. The effort also works toward a statement from African scientific leaders calling on governments globally to act responsibly on mirror life research, demonstrating that concerns about mirror life risks are shared across the international scientific community.
