Project Highlights

In this audio series, for the first time, Wilmot James shares personal stories growing up as a child of apartheid, being imprisoned as a student activist, and about his work as a close advisor to leaders like Nelson Mandela. Forged in social change movements and tested in public health crises, Wilmot’s story offers us both a warning and a guide to sustaining a healthy civic society, weaving themes of biography, leadership, history, and health.

The series was created by Jennifer Galvin, Filmmaker-in-Residence at the Pandemic Center.

This project premiered at the 2026 PROV/DOC festival, held on October 2-3 and organized by the Brown Political Review, a student-run magazine, and Clara Baisinger-Rosen, a Student Research Assistant at the Pandemic Center. Find more information and links to listen on the series’ webpage.
